Art Basel Miami Beach
December 4-7, 2014

It's that wonderful time of the year when Art Basel Miami Beach is getting ready to open. It runs December 4 -7 and is one of the biggest and best art fairs in the world. Because of it, Miami and Miami Beach have become major art world destinations. Last year 75,000 visitors attended the fair,

The fair takes place at the very large Miami Beach Convention Center. It's a big fair but broken down into nine smaller Sectors with visitor guides for each. Be sure to look for the Sector guides and other information when entering the fair.

The Sectors are:

Galleries: The largest sector with more than 200 of the world's leading Modern and contemporary art galleries - from North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia. They display paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, prints, photography, film, video, and digital art by over 4,000 artists. The galleries are juried into the fair.

Nova: Designed for galleries to present one, two or three artists showing new works that have been created within the last three years, the Nova sector often features never-before-seen pieces fresh from the artist's studio and strong juxtapositions.

Positions: This sector allows curators, critics, and collectors to discover ambitious new talents from all over the globe by providing a platform for a single artist to present one major project.

Edition: Leading publishers of editioned works, prints, and multiples exhibit the results of their collaboration with renowned artists.

Kabinett: Participants are chosen from the Galleries sector to present curated exhibitions in a separately delineated space within their booths. The curatorial concepts for Kabinett are diverse, including thematic group exhibitions, art-historical showcases, and solo shows.

Public: This sector offers its visitors a chance to see outdoor sculptures, interventions, and performances, sited within an open and public exhibition space at Collins Park (2100 Collins AVE) near the beach. The sector is produced in collaboration with the Bass Museum of Art. The Public opening night event is December 3rd, from 8:30 - 10:00pm.

Film: The Film sector presents a dynamic program of films by and about artists. Screenings take place inside the Convention Center, and in the outdoor setting of SoundScape Park where works are shown on the 7,000-square-foot outdoor projection wall of the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center. Organized in association with David Gryn, Director of London's Artprojx. In addition, Zurich film connoisseur This Brunner selects a feature length film for a special screening at the Colony Theatre.

Survey: Survey presents precise art historical projects that may include solo presentations by an individual artist, or juxtapositions and thematic exhibits from artists representing a range of cultures, generations, and artistic approaches. For 2014, you'll find displays on: Ralston Crawford, Henry Darger, Poul Gernes, Tetsuya Ishida, Lydia Okumura, Lotty Rosenfeld, Michelle Stuart, Taller Torres-García and Alfredo Volpi, plus others.

Magazines: Art publications from around the world display their magazines in single-magazine stands or the collective booth. Editors and publishers are often present at the show. Great for finding current and past issues of magazines.

Miami Art Week - December 1 - 7, 2014

Let me start off by saying Miami Art Week is the best Contemporary Art Week in the United States, and most likely the best/largest in the world. If you love art this is your week, be in Miami.

More than 1100 galleries from around the world are bring art to Miami and Miami Beach. Plus all of the art museums and non-profit art organizations are planning special exhibitions and events. Did I mention galleries and artist studios, Miami has a bunch of good ones that should be visited, and much more. Finally, the weather should be in the 70-80 degree range, making for a great week.

If possible, plan on spending at least four days at Miami Art Week, as the week is flush with opportunities to mix, mingle; and, of course, feast one’s eyes on an incredible array of great art! Not only are the art fairs vibrant and engaging in of themselves, but related events and parties occur at local art museums, private collections, non-profit art organizations, galleries and artist studios.

About 1/5 of Art Basel Miami Beach

Art Basel Miami Beach – held at the Miami Beach Convention Center - is the largest art fair of the week, featuring more than 250 top galleries from around the world. Last year 75,000 visitors from Europe, Asia, Latin America and the United States visited.

Design Miami (a major design fair) takes place right next to Art Basel. If you are looking for a some really creative designs this is a must see fair. A reduced price combined admission ticket for both the fairs can be purchased at Art Basel.

Other art fairs in Miami Beach include: Scope Miami, SELECT, Pulse, and “Untitled. Art Fair Miami Beach” are satellite art fairs are located on or near the beach; enjoy the ocean view!.

Hotel-based art fairs in Miami Beach include NADA, Ink and Aqua Art Miami. Ink is an art fair specializing in prints and limited editions. Aqua, is a terrific art fair not to be missed.

Poolside at NADA Art Fair

Art Miami – held in Miami's Wynwood Art District - is the most established art fair in Miami; it's been around for years. Context and Art Miami are next to each other and produced by the same organization. You'll also find Miami Project, Pinta, Spectrum, Red Dot and Sculpt Miami in the same neighborhood.

Most of Miami's art galleries and major private art collections are located in the Wynwood Art District along with the Wynood Walls, featuring street art at it's best. One can easily spend two days in the area and still miss a lot!

Interior of Miami River Art Fair

Downtown Miami you'll find the Miami River Art Fair at the James L. Knight Center and Concept aboard the mega yacht SeaFair, near Bayfront Park and the InterContinental Hotel. Miami River Art Fair is good for affordable Latin American and European art. Concept is in their first year and will primarily feature galleries in the Secondary Art Market (resale of previously owned artworks).

Exterior of Art Miami and a Shuttle

Free Shuttles, we highly recommend the free shuttle services, especially when traveling between Miami and Miami Beach. Shuttles are offered by Art Miami, Pulse, NADA, Concept, Fridge, SELECT, Miami River Art Fair and a few other fairs. However, sometimes the shuttles can be difficult to catch, so you might need other options like public transit or cabs. Art Basel Miami Beach
James Edward Deeds, Jr. Kabinett Exhibit

For the 2013 Art Kabinett program, Hirschl & Adler Modern will present a highly focused installation of drawings by newly-discovered Outsider artist James Edward Deeds, Jr. (1908-1987), a near life-long ward of the state of Missouri and colorful mental patient at Nevada, Missouri’s State Hospital, No. 3.

Deeds was committed in 1936 to the state hospital, diagnosed with dementia praecox and schizophrenia. His intricate drawings, measuring approximately 9 x 8 inches, were executed in graphite and crayon on the official ledger paper of the institution that housed him for nearly four decades. The artist sewed them into a crudely bound album and clutched it as a kind of talisman as he endured worsening living conditions, extensive shock therapy and drug regimens. By 1966 the artist transferred the album to his family who inadvertently parted with it. In 1970 it was found in a street side junk heap by a fourteen year-old boy who would safeguard it for next 36 years.

Today Edward Deeds’ 140 double-sided drawings represent the most recent entry to the Outsider art canon. They debuted at the 2011 Outsider art fair in New York and received their first formal exhibition at Hirschl & Adler in January 2013. Sixty works then traveled to Lausanne, Switzerland where they were exhibited at the Collection de l’Art Brut in spring of 2013. A selection will also travel to Paris this fall for a show at Galerie Christian Berst.

Verge Art Miami Beach
December 6 - 9 2012
The Greenview Hotel, 1671 Washington Ave @ 17th St, Miami Beach
http://www.vergeartfair.com/

Verge Art Fair is an international exposition of new contemporary and emerging art held annually concurrent with Art Basel Miami Beach. Launched in 2009, the fair defies convention as a unique exposition of artists and the galleries who represent them.

This year Verge introduces two new initiatives for its Miami Beach edition: Light Assembly, a pilot video art and architecture exposition program and Art Pages, a publication in partnership with the renowned VANlist email announcement service, slated for citywide distribution during Art Basel Miami Beach.

Verge is an international platform for the most exciting and interesting in new and emerging art. Verge exists to establish boundaries of the extraordinary as a counter to the natural compulsion towards stagnation in the way art is evaluated and delivered to the public. Staying true to this necessary state for the advancement of art requires a sustained focus on the best new ideas and practices of those marginal or newly emerging to international art audiences. The satisfaction of this fixed requirement for a healthy and competitive artistic culture is at the core of Verge as an international exposition of the highest quality artistic production and the galleries, museums and audiences who sustain it.

NAKED
A program dedicated to the presentation of new projects without fairing from the white cube context. And other works in process, without any sealed formalization, free from certain materiality and weight. A collection of projects which the selected galleries will present in an open space specially designed for the purpose.

JUST PRODUCED
How can we relate emerging artistic production and the market? What does it mean to produce a work of art in a temporary period of artistic residence? What system of relation can we come up with to facilitate the transition from a research space into an exhibition space?

In this section we present a selection of projects produced in a residence of visual artists, recently produced in the current residential course and ready to be exhibited in a demanding competitive context.

A collaboration agreement between JUSTMAD MIA and the ArtCenter/South Florida, will allow professionals and the public who attend the fair to have access to the latest and most stimulating production of artistic work from this emblematic residence in the south of Florida.

http://miamiriverartfair.com/

The first edition of the Miami River | Art Fair, an international, contemporary art fair, will take place at the Downtown Miami Convention Center inside the James L. Knight International Center. This art fair was conceived as a showcase of world-class artists and galleries in an indoor booth setting at the Riverfront Hall which overlooks the one-of-a-kind outdoor Riverwalk Sculpture Mall which features monumental sculpture on the banks of the historic Miami River.

The Miami River Art Fair has the decade-long revitalization efforts of the Miami River at its core. To do our part in the revitalization of this area, our mission is to redirect the tourism boom during Art Basel to this up-and-coming area. The Miami River Art Fair will be the first landmark fine art event in the area, and its magnitude and scope will lay the groundwork for this area to be one of Miami's newest fine art destinations.

Special Projects and Collectives Cutting-edge projects, cultural institutions and visual art research initiatives will be showcased throughout the fair, providing an educational and informative context to the art fair.

Individual Artists: Modeled on the concept of studio visits, artists will be able to network without gallery representation to collectors, curators and art professionals.
