David Hockney and iPad Technology

Every few days David Hockney creates a painting with his iPad's Brushes application, then emails it to identical devices on display at Paris's Pierre Berge-Yves St. Laurent Foundation, where his "Fresh Flowers" exhibition runs through January 30th.

Throughout his career, Hockney has managed to constantly reinvent himself while retaining his artistic DNA. Famous for his crisp, languid depictions of poolside California, he has forayed into photomontage, fax art, art history, and, in the 80s, digital drawing on the computer program Quantel Paintbox.

SCOPE Miami Art Fair 2011PERCOLATES

After visits to fifteen of the twenty-two Art Basel Miami Beach art fairs, and the viewing of over 5000 artworks in four days, some pieces naturally rose to the top, but it took a month of distilling to identify them. The SCOPE fair had more than its share of memorable pieces, and you can see some of them here, as a preview for next year’s offerings.

The art show that established its name by curating cutting-edge contemporary art from around the world just completed its eleventh year in December of 2011. 80 international galleries presented alongside museum-quality programming, collector tours, screenings, and special events. By Introducing artists, curators, and cutting-edge galleries to new international audiences SCOPE has become the most comprehensive destination for the emerging art world. In over thirty five fairs spanning the past ten years, SCOPE has solidified its position as the premier show-case for international emerging contemporary art. With art fairs in Miami, Basel, New York, London and the Hamptons, SCOPE Art Show has garnered critical acclaim, with sales of over $100 million and attendance of over 350,000 visitors.

An outstanding work at SCOPE this year was presented by the Gagliardi Art System of Torino, Italy. In the picture below, two seated figures are engaged in conversation. It takes a minute to realize that the realistic yet eerie facial movements and seeming-articulation are projected onto their shaped faces. Upon further inspection you realize the projection is coming from the backpacks in front of them, somehow. They speak a poetry inspired from interviews by the artists with homeless people in New York. The term ‘kinematic images’ apparently refers to the projection of video onto curved surfaces, in this case, and know that we are to see much more of cutting-edge technology-driven artworks. Large groups of fair attendees continued to be enraptured. If a museum owned this compelling and provocative piece, patrons would come from all over the world to see it. The price of $121,000.00 for this seductive artwork seems very reasonable.

Fountain Miami 2011A Fair for Young Artists

If you approached Fountain Fair at Art Basel Miami Beach 2011 and thought "oh brother, this looks like a hippie fair", you'd miss some VERY innovative and daring, cutting-edge artwork. The sloppy exterior does not convey the value of the treasures inside and you could say the styles of work offered were all over the map. These galleries and artists were showing some very successful experiments. The casualness of their presentation does make you feel like you can linger and really absorb every artistic endeavor. Here's a chance to buy exciting artwork you can afford and let the heavy-hitting art patrons buy the tried and true excellent artwork elsewhere.

Fountain Art Fair was founded in 2006 as an attempt to leverage support for smaller independent galleries to gain access to larger collectors and critics. Since its inception, Fountain has held six exhibitions in New York, one in Los Angeles, one in Chicago, and is now celebrating its sixth exhibition in Miami. From its roots deep within the independent Brooklyn art scene, Fountain has grown to represent over 25 international avant-garde galleries and projects, showcasing progressive primary-market works.

Art Asia Miami 2011, An Eye-Opening Adventure

One approaches a contemporary Asian art exhibit, like Art Asia Miami 2011, wondering if the modern work shown will reflect stereotypical or traditional ‘Asian’ art references. Do the participating artists or galleries reflect a common aesthetic? Can one tell if these artists are Asian by looking at the artwork?
Not at all. In a few cases the subject matter in some paintings, two-dimensional constructions, sculpture or photographs does reflect ‘Eastern’ influence but generally has little in the way of identifying the work as anything but innovative, varied, individualistic with an emphasis on great ideas.

The term ‘contemporary art’ is a slippery fish. Typically it is defined as art produced at this present point in time or more formally as art produced since World War II. On view at Art Asia were modern works, postmodern -art emerging from the influence of media and actualized through installation and conceptual art, multimedia- and art responding to both high and popular culture, such as images influenced by reality television, popular music, escapist fiction, and images of the west. Some of these influences could be found in various artworks.

This highly selective showcase of galleries from around the world broadens the understanding of Asian contemporary art and focuses each year on the best of established and emerging contemporary artists from throughout Asia. Newcomer galleries included AiBo Fine Asian Art of Rye, NY and Hanoi, Vietnam, Crimson Gate and Zadok Gallery of Miami, FEAST Projects and Hong Kong and Galerie Ora-Ora both from Hong Kong. Also new were KIMJAESUN Gallery of Busan, Korea, and Tally Beck Contemporary of New York and Bangkok.

Ethan Cohen of Ethan Cohen Fine Arts remarked, “Art Asia Miami 2011 was an extremely successful fair- well attended, well organized and brought successful results to clients, dealers and the general public. Art Asia brings a more diverse and powerful art experience to Miami each December. “Art Asia exceeded our expectations and helped to broaden the continuously expanding global familiarity with artist Liu Bolin. With over forty-five Liu Bolin works sold, and approximately 10 museum inquiries, we left the fair extremely satisfied,” commented Eli Klein of Eli Klein Fine Art.

Especially fetching were works by Yang Yang. An accomplished painter and sculptor, his work is slightly reminiscent of Marc Chagall’s work both in style and color sensibility. Several of his paintings sold at the show. Yang Yang's work is widely collected by public and private collectors. His museum exhibitions include the Museum of Fine Art in Shannxi, China and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, one of the top ten comprehensive museums in the U.S. Yang Yang has exhibited in many fine galleries including Gallery 456 in New York and the gallery of the Chinese-American Arts Council. Lui Qu Wei, curator of the Museum of Fine Art in Shaanxi, describes Yang Yang’s work as combining the quality of the “Oriental mystics with tragic magnificence”.

In its fourth year the Art Asia fair successfully concluded with strong sales and attendance of over 30,000 visitors. The central location in Wynwood, mid-town Miami, in a space shared by SCOPE, is clean and airy with a comfortable layout. Two fairs: one admission price. With impressive international newcomer galleries joining Art Asia, it was an exceptional showcase of art from diverse Asian regions including East Asia, South East Asia, India, and the Middle East.
Prepare for year five by attending Art Asia Miami from December 5 through the 9th, in 2012. Art Asia will continue to challenge pre-existing notions of Asian contemporary art today and you will be inspired, informed and excited to see their offerings.

AOA Tribal Art MiamiArt from Africa, Oceania and the Americas

AOA Tribal Art Miami 2011, November 30th - December 4th.

Because AOA Tribal Art was a latecomer to this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach show, and a little off the beaten path, the attendance was understandably light for a first year although the opening night cocktail party drew crowds of local collectors and art lovers. The quality of the some 200 pieces shown was superb and a must-see fair for your visit to this annual event next year. AOA Tribal Art Miami featured African masks, house panels and Oceanic shields, as well as ancient zoomorphic vessels from Pre-Columbian cultures. These pieces, all for sale, represented rare items and some of the last high-quality pieces available on the private market and not in a museum.

AOA is an acronym used by major museums, auction houses and galleries, which stands for Africa (usually sub-saharan), Oceania and the Americas. Oceania typically includes Australia, Melanesia, New Zealand and Polynesia. Many art lovers are aware of the link between African art and its influence on modern art by way of Picasso and his contemporaries.

The venue, Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, commonly called The Arsht Center, Florida's largest performing arts center, is located on Biscayne Boulevard in the Omni neighborhood of downtown, Miami. It’s well known for its world-class performances and educational programs. Since its inception in 2006, it’s the second-largest performing arts center in the United States by area (not seats), after the Lincoln Center in New York City.

Participating representatives were David Cassera of New York and LaConnor Washington, Wayne Heathcote of London, Throckmorton Fine Art and Luz Miriam Toro, both of New York City, James Stephenson African Art of Brooklyn and Tribal Art Hunter of South Florida. These names represent some of the most famous dealers in the International Tribal Art Community. Each brought their best work, which was well lit, beautifully and spacially displayed. The offerings compared favorably with the Kathryn White Collection at Seattle Art Museum, known for its high quality.

Pulse Miami 2011A Very Fine Art Fair

This excellent art fair was located at the Ice Palace Studios, in Miami's Wynwood Arts District. It was the seventh edition of Pulse Miami and featured some 90 international exhibitors. Featuring larger booths, more spacious aisles, and a new garden lounge, this is one of the art fairs you should never miss. It's the closest fair to downtown Miami and to the excellent collection at The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation. Here're a few images to show you what Pulse offered viewers this year.

Art Miami maintains a preeminent position in America's contemporary art fair market. Located in the center of the Wynwood Art District in Miami. Scope, Art Asia and Red Dot were located just across the street.

It has a rich history, it is the original and longest-running contemporary art fair in Miami and continues to receive praise for the variety of unparalleled art that it offers. As acclaim for Art Miami grows, the fair continues to attract the participation of affluent collectors and high-quality galleries from all over the world. It is the "can't miss" event for all serious collectors, curators, museum directors, and interior designers providing an intimate look at some of the most important work at the forefront of the international contemporary art movement. Based out of Seattle, this fair has a distinctly west coast character set off by the indoor/outdoor atmosphere of the Aqua Hotel. Without a doubt, the best hotel art fair in Miami Beach. The fair organizers continue to seek out vibrant and noteworthy programs in their region as well as the greater USA and abroad, with a particular interest in supporting young dealers and galleries with strong emerging and early mid-career artists. With a focus on a collaborative, exhibition-like presentation commingling galleries and artists, SEVEN looks beyond the art fair model to create a new platform for viewing and acquiring works of art.

SEVEN’s new location, a 15,000 square foot warehouse at 2637 North Miami Ave at NE 27th Street in the Wynwood district, situates the project in the heart of other major art fairs as well as walking distance to the Rubell Collection.

This art fair is divided into two sections and is comprised of a mix of established and emerging galleries vetted by a committee of prominent international dealers. In addition, PULSE develops original cultural programs with a series of large-scale installations. Its PULSE Play video lounge, the fair's ongoing video lounge series, will be curated this year by artist Lucie Fontaine. Domesticity II, created with IKEA furniture, and reminiscent of the living room in the intro of The Simpsons.

The PULSE Committee will award the PULSE Prize, to an emerging artist of exceptional talent selected from those on view in the solo-artist IMPULSE section. The winner will receive a $2,500 cash grant, and the opportunity to design the limited edition tote bag provided to fair VIPs. For this edition, attendees will receive bags designed by PULSE Miami 2010 prize winner Jorge Díaz-Torres. Prior recipients include Eric Beltz, Chen Chien-Jen, David Ellis, Philip Gurrey, Alexander Massouras, Chris Natrop, OK Mountain, Emilio Chapela Perez, Duke Riley, and Travis Somerville

PULSE will offer a complimentary shuttle service between The Lowes Hotel Miami Beach, The Convention Center, and The Ice Palace throughout the duration of the show. Shuttles will run from 9am to 8pm.

Art Basel Miami Beach is just a ten days away. So what's the big deal? Simply put, Art Basel Miami Beach is the biggest and most important contemporary art fair in the United States. If you can make it to Miami you'll be overwhelmed with the amount of visual art that's available for viewing. Besides Art Basel, there will be eighteen other art fairs in Miami and Miami Beach. Art Galleries
At Art Basel Miami Beach, more than 250 of the world's leading art galleries for modern and contemporary art from North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia will display 20th and 21st century artworks. The show features painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, print, photography, film, performance, video and digital art by more than 2,000 artists. Art Kabinett
In Art Kabinett, galleries selected for the Art Galleries sector will present 30 curated exhibitions in a separately delineated space within their booth. The curatorial concepts for Art Kabinett are diverse, including thematic group exhibitions, art-historical showcases and solo shows for rising stars.

Art Video
Art Video features film and video works by today's most exciting international artists presented by the galleries of Art Basel Miami Beach. Organized in association with London's Artprojx, Art Video will be screened for the first time in SoundScape Park on the 7,000-square-foot outdoor projection wall of the New World Center, as well as within five viewing pods inside the Miami Beach Convention Center.

Art Public
Art Public presents outdoor sculptures, interventions and performances within an open and public exhibition format. This year, Art Basel Miami Beach is collaborating with the Bass Museum of Art, situated in Collins Park where the artworks will be concentrated. Christine Y. Kim, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and Co-Founder of the Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND), is the new curator of Art Public.

VIP Preview Benefitting Lotus House Women’s Shelter Offers First View of Extraordinary Contemporary and Modern Works.

On Tuesday, November 29th from 5:30 to 10 p.m., Art Miami, Miami’s longest running contemporary art fair and anchor fair to the City of Miami, will host its Opening Night VIP Preview to benefit The Lotus House Women’s Shelter. The Art Miami VIP Preview has become the most important kickoff event of Art Week for the City of Miami and one of the most sought after events for serious collectors to attend. This high-profile evening is the first view for collectors,curators, museum professionals and art enthusiasts to acquire some of the finest and most important works of art the contemporary market has to offer before the fair opens to the public the following day. With more than 110 prestigious international galleries participating, Art Miami is distinguished for its quality, depth, and diversity and maintains a preeminent position in America’s contemporary art fair market. Art Miami has grown to include more than 110 galleries from 18 countries, and will showcase 1,000 artists from 60 countries around theworld. From the United States, 400 artists will be shown from nearly 100 cities.

The First Viewbenefit for The Lotus House Women’s Shelter is scheduled for 5:30 to 7 p.m. and requires a $25 ticket paid online in advance or at the door.

“In an effort to meet the continued increasing demand to attend the benefit Art Miami created the ability for attendees to purchase their First View Tickets in advance online at www.lotushouseshelter.org/events.html,” said Nick Korniloff, Director of Art Miami. “We are also extremely proud that 100 percent of the proceeds generated from the VIP Preview benefit will once again benefit The Lotus House Women’s Shelter.”

The Lotus House and Art Miami partnership already has raised more than $70,000 and remains an integral part of Art Miami’s larger commitment to the City of Miami. Art Miami also will employ a number of women from The Lotus House to work at the fair.

“We are proud to be partnering again with Art Miami and truly appreciate the Fair’s continued support of The Lotus House,” said Constance Collins Margulies, President of The Lotus House Women’s Shelter. “The funds raised from the VIP Opening Night Preview over the years has helped our program expand and offer even more opportunities to provide the vital work we do for the women of Miami.”

Following the benefit at 7 p.m., Art Miami’s VIP Preview will begin for all Art Miami VIP Card Holders. This has become the “can’t miss” event for serious collectors, museum professionals, curators, art enthusiasts, gallerists and artists to attend. Last year, more than 7,500 guests attended the prestigious evening including Attendees will experience Art Miami’s gallery-like ambience in the state-of-the-art 125,000-square-foot Art Miami Pavilion in Midtown Miami’s burgeoning Wynwood Arts District, as presented by this year’s sponsors: Sotheby’s International Realty, Persol and Balthazar. Red Dot Miami is pleased to return to the Wynwood Art District in Miami. Red Dot will remain in the same prime location, adjacent to Art Miami and among the other high profile fairs that run concurrent to Art Basel Miami Beach. The big art week in Miami and Miami Beach will soon be upon us. Art Basel Miami Beach and eighteen other satellite art fairs will be opening around November 29th and continuing through December 4, 2011.

Time to start planning your trip if you haven’t already, for the best prices book your airline and hotels early. If you've never been to Miami for the contemporary art fairs this will be a good year. Warm Florida weather and more than 750 art galleries will be presenting artwork to stimulate and entice you into purchasing. The economy is down, but interest in artwork is still very high or events like this would not be happening and you might even find a good deal.

There will be contemporary artworks for all levels of interest and art collecting. The art fairs will be large and prestigious like Art Basel Miami Beach and there will be smaller art fairs like PooL and Fountain Miami, which primarily work directly with visual artists and offer an alternative art experience.

Art Miami, Pulse Miami, Scope Miami, Art Asia, Red Dot Miami, and NADA Art Fair, are traditional art fairs with art display in temporary art booths. Aqua11, Art Now, INK, PooL and Verge are Hotel art fairs and artwork is display in hotel rooms. SEVEN, is renting a space in the Wynwood art district for the seven featured galleries. Zones Miami and Fountain will also be showing in Wynwood and offer an alternative art fair experience. Zones is Miami based and shows emerging artists primarily from Miami.

The art museums of Miami, will also be featuring special events and exhibitions. And, don't forget the monthly artwalk in the Wynwood Art District, the galleries of Miami are worth a visit.

Aqua Art Miami contemporary art fair takes place in Miami concurrent with Art Basel Miami Beach. This year the fair returns to its roots at the Aqua Hotel where it was first launched in 2005.

Based in Seattle, Aqua's organizers have made it their mission to promote innovative programming from the west coast as well as the greater USA and abroad, with a particular interest in young dealers and galleries with strong emerging artist programs. In celebration of Fountain’s dedication to various forms of art, a showcase of live musical performances will be held on the front lawn. Performances will include indie noise rock band NO AGE, G. LOVE of G. Love and the Special Sauce, NINJASONIK, DJ Lauren Flax, DJ Kimyon, and a special DJ performance by SHEPARD FAIREY. Located at 2505 N. Miami Ave at the corner of 25th St., Fountain Art Fair will be open everyday to the public at 11am and will remain open on Friday and Saturday nights until 12am for special live performances.

Although there is a tradition in France of artists fairs, starting from the famous Courbet’s Salon des Independents, PooL is the premiere fair in the US dedicated to un-represented artists. The first edition took place in 2000 under the title : New York Independent Art Fair.

The simple, modest approach of the PooL Art Fair offers an exciting alternative to the "Art Fair" experience for dealers and collectors as well as the general public. PooL's purpose is to create a meeting ground for outstanding artists, primarily those who do not yet have gallery representation. Contemporary art dealers, artist agents, emerging galleries, artists' collectives, and non-profit organizations are also invited to apply to participate as exhibitors. The fair serves as an invaluable resource for the artistic community and the general public.

Our organization is committed to present to the world, talented artists that do not yet have representation. Frère Independent offers artists the opportunity to be a part of the unique and important cultural environment that manifests during Art Basel Miami Beach. Founded in 2002, New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) is a not-for-profit collective of professionals working with contemporary art. Our mission is to create an open flow of information, support, and collaboration within our field and to develop a stronger sense of community among our constituency. We believe that the adversarial approach to exhibiting and selling art has run its course. We believe that change can be achieved through fostering constructive thought and dialogue between various points in the art industry from large galleries to small spaces, non-profit and commercial alike.

Our international group of members includes both galleries and individuals (art professionals, independent curators, and established gallery directors). The various perspectives and ideas offered by our diverse roster creates a network which, at its most basic, is a resource which people could contribute to and take as much (or as little) as they are inclined. The benefits for some may be a matter of business, for others a source of intellectual or aesthetic stimulation.

To date, our initiatives have succeeded on two fronts: making the contemporary arts more accessible for the general public, and creating opportunities that nurture the growth of emerging artists, curators, and galleries. Our EVENTS have included: artist talks/gallery walks with critics and curators; benefits in support of charitable institutions; members-only seminars to stimulate dedication and ethics in our profession; and an annual art fair in Miami, which is held in December and is free and open to the public.

The New Art Dealers Alliance is a not-for profit organization, registered in the State of New York. Membership is by invitation only, following nomination by an existing member and approval by the executive and advisory boards.

PULSE Contemporary Art Fair is proud to announce the exhibitors and programming for its 2010 Miami edition. The sixth edition of the fair - the first under new Director Cornell DeWitt - will offer a blend of 82 leading and emerging international galleries alongside the hallmark program of original cultural projects for which the fair is renowned. PULSE Miami 2010 will also introduce a new focus on the city and culture of Miami, and an unprecedented emphasis on the visitor experience, foremost through its exhibitors and programming, but also via new culinary partners and social opportunities.

"PULSE consistently achieves success by presenting a first class roster of galleries on a scale that is manageable, and in a setting that is comfortable. Our core exhibitors, who could show in any fair the world, recognize this and it keeps them coming back" DeWitt explained. Joining such long-running PULSE veterans as Conner Contemporary Art, Hilger Modern/Contemporary, and Yossi Milo Gallery, are a wealth of new exhibitors. Miami's Gallery Diet will bring work by artist Christy Gast, who will have a solo exhibition at the de la Cruz Collection coinciding with the fair. Another newcomer is Galleri Maria Veie, a central figure in Oslo's under-recognized contemporary art scene, bringing Jumana Manna to the IMPULSE section of solo artist booths. From New York comes Larissa Goldston Gallery, whose artists on view include the young American artist Orly Genger. For its garden area, PULSE Miami has commissioned Genger to create Beefcakes, a functional elaboration on prior installations by Genger, including her current MASS MoCA installation Big Boss, in which a gigantic construction of woven climbing rope appears to explode through a wall into a colossal mass throughout the gallery space.

To enhance the experience of our guests, PULSE Miami has commissioned a rotating program of food trucks from some of Miami's favorite restaurants: the wildly popular Latin Burger; gourmet food truck pioneer Gastropod; Jefe's Original, serving their signature fish tacos; and Yellow Submarine, purveyors of the finest Colombian fast food. Each day a different truck will be available to guests in the fair's plaza - please see the schedule available on the next page. Finally, at the end of each day visitors are invited to reward themselves and partake in cocktails at the PULSE Bar, from 4pm to 7pm.

Prior to moving to Brooklyn sixteen years ago Jeffrey Bishop lived in Seattle and was represented by Linda Farris Gallery and Myerson & Nowinski Gallery.

Bishop has an MFA from the University of Washington. He is currently on the Board of Trustees of Bang on the Can and Independent Curators International in NYC and on the Advisory Board of Henry Art Gallery in Seattle.

This Thursday evening an exhibition of photographs by Jefferson Hayman will open at the Allen Gallery in Chelsea. The exhibit will feature photographs from Hayman's New York series. Opening Reception, September 25th, 6 - 8:30pm. There will also be an open house with the artist in attendance on Saturday, September 27th from 2 - 4pm. Exhibition closes October 14th.

Exhibit will feature over 30 Black and White photographs all created in Hayman’s classic and poetic style. Each photograph is housed in its own antique or artist made frame which further accentuates the time capsule like feel of the work.

For over 20 years Vik Muniz has consistently defined art as a subtle connection between mind and matter by recreating iconic images while simultaneously revealing and debasing the process of their making. While keeping within the conceptual frameworks of Muniz's previously established images, Verso marks a return to the object-making that first brought him attention in the late 1980s.

Verso consists of a group of 3-dimensional trompe-l'oeils of the actual backs of such iconic works as Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, Van Gogh's Starry Night and Seurat's La Grande Jatte that, over a period of six years, Muniz photographed and systematically studied in partnership with the curatorial and conservation departments of MOMA, the Guggenheim and the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as with a team of dedicated craftsman, artists, forgers, and technicians. These are disconcertingly faithful reproductions in a 1:1 scale realized in an inch-by-inch process that did not spare the slightest detail. Every scratch, dent or scribble is physically reproduced to photographic precision. Authentic looking labels, worn-away tape, faded pencil notations and actual period hardware and carpentry make it hard even for an expert to disbelieve they are seeing the actual backs of these masterpieces.

Along with Verso, Muniz will be exhibiting equally confounding recreations of the backs of famous photographs from the New York Times archive at MOMA. The backs are full of cancelled dates, yellowed newspaper captions and rubber cement stains.

ART HK 08 will take place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). The HKCEC is a renowned architectural landmark having been the backdrop for the ceremony of the handover of Hong Kong by the British to the People’s Republic of China in 1997.

The HKCEC is located centrally in the Wanchai district on the north side of Hong Kong Island, overlooking the world famous Victoria Harbour. The HKCEC is well served by public transport and has an array of restaurants and cafes both within the complex and within easy walking distance.

Michael Corbin - Art Ideas for the New Year

It's time to reflect on the past twelve months and make resolutions for the New Year. 2007, was a good year for the artworld, and 2008, will hopefully be just as strong.

Art collector and author, Michael Corbin has some good ideas on how to make the New Year better for those involved in art. Here're a few of his ideas on how to best enter the New Year, they came from an article that he wrote for absolutearts.com.

1. Art gallery operators: Please smile occasionally and TRY to be welcoming to visitors. This may actually help you sell art on that VERY day. Of course, many galleries are warm and inviting, but many are not.

2. Artists: Please stop slamming art fairs. We know that they present all sorts of hazards and issues, but they ARE indeed legitimate venues for LIVING art. Ultimately, let's be glad that they exist. If they vanish, that would NOT be a good thing. I don't know. I guess I've stayed too long at the fair.

3. Art museums: PLEASE get your cities to create more highway markers/signs that direct visitors straight to your location. It's so easy for people to get lost in an unfamiliar city. Don't GIVE visitors reasons to go to the movies instead.

4. Art collectors: Let's do MORE to promote the work of emerging artists. We should actually create more art collectors. Yes, in a way this is a dumb move because we're creating our own competition, but emerging art is a VAST ocean that will never run dry. Artists are born every day. It's the most exciting sector of the art market.

Edge Zones Art Fair, Miami, Florida, December 5th - 9th, 2007. Located in the Wynwood Art District. This was an artist fair, where the displays were organized and paid for by working artists. When returning in 2008, this will be one of the first art fairs on my must visit list, however they will most likely be in a new location.

Miguel Guzman, the artwork on the left was my favorite in all of Miami. If you're a gallery and looking for good artists you should get to know Miguel and his work.

I'll try to add a few notes and captions about the following three images. Unfortunately, my images from of the Bridge, Aqua, Ink and Flow fairs were accidentally lost, so not much to show you. However, I enjoyed these fairs and the quality of work being shown was good.

The AIPAD Photography Show Miami, December 5th - 9th, 2007. This fair presented more than 40 top photography dealers from around the world. All of the dealers are members of the Association of International Photography Art Dealers and this was AIPAD's first Miami fair. The exhibtion focused on fine art photography from both contemporary and modern masters.

Some of my favorite artworks were the new works of Joel-Peter Witkin on display at Etherton Gallery. The large Jerry Uelsmann images displayed at Andrew Smith Gallery were impressive. Also, Edward Burtynsky's large scale color photographs from his Quarries book were spectacular. Scott Nichols Gallery from San Francisco, had really good selection of Ruth Bernhard and Imogen Cunningham prints.

AIPAD's next fair will be, The Photography Show New York 2008, April 10th - 13th, in New York city. If you're interested in collecting fine art photography you try to vist AIPAD's art fairs. Hopefully, they will return to Miami for the 2008 art fairs next December.

Pulse Miami - 2007

This was the third edition of Pulse Miami, and it ran December 5th - 9th, 2007. The fair was located at Soho Studios, it's new permanent home in the Wynwood Art District with over 40,000 square feet of exhibition space. Showing at the fair were 80 top dealers from around the world. The opening night preview was very elegant and one of my favorites, featuring good music, food and drinks, and exciting contemporary art.

Art Miami - 2007

Art Miami was held December 5th - 9th in the Wynwood Art District of Miami. Nearly 100 galleries from 17 countries particpated, many of them for the first time. Once anchoring the January art calendar, for nearly two decades first will be their first year presenting in December with the other art fairs. They were the only fair to offer VIP visitors the services of art advisors throughout the show's run.

Zones Artfair

Wynwood Art District, 2214 N. Miami Avenue, Miami. The fair will again showcase Videos, Paintings, Photos, Sculpture, and Performances by a selection of established and emerging artists in an expanded space of 20,000 square feet. In addition, they are launching "TalkZones", a series of daily brunches, which will serve as networking spaces for art professionals. Located near Miami’s leading galleries and the Rubell, Margulis Collection.
