Art Basel Miami Beach
December 4-7, 2014

It's that wonderful time of the year when Art Basel Miami Beach is getting ready to open. It runs December 4 -7 and is one of the biggest and best art fairs in the world. Because of it, Miami and Miami Beach have become major art world destinations. Last year 75,000 visitors attended the fair,

The fair takes place at the very large Miami Beach Convention Center. It's a big fair but broken down into nine smaller Sectors with visitor guides for each. Be sure to look for the Sector guides and other information when entering the fair.

The Sectors are:

Galleries: The largest sector with more than 200 of the world's leading Modern and contemporary art galleries - from North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia. They display paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, prints, photography, film, video, and digital art by over 4,000 artists. The galleries are juried into the fair.

Nova: Designed for galleries to present one, two or three artists showing new works that have been created within the last three years, the Nova sector often features never-before-seen pieces fresh from the artist's studio and strong juxtapositions.

Positions: This sector allows curators, critics, and collectors to discover ambitious new talents from all over the globe by providing a platform for a single artist to present one major project.

Edition: Leading publishers of editioned works, prints, and multiples exhibit the results of their collaboration with renowned artists.

Kabinett: Participants are chosen from the Galleries sector to present curated exhibitions in a separately delineated space within their booths. The curatorial concepts for Kabinett are diverse, including thematic group exhibitions, art-historical showcases, and solo shows.

Public: This sector offers its visitors a chance to see outdoor sculptures, interventions, and performances, sited within an open and public exhibition space at Collins Park (2100 Collins AVE) near the beach. The sector is produced in collaboration with the Bass Museum of Art. The Public opening night event is December 3rd, from 8:30 - 10:00pm.

Film: The Film sector presents a dynamic program of films by and about artists. Screenings take place inside the Convention Center, and in the outdoor setting of SoundScape Park where works are shown on the 7,000-square-foot outdoor projection wall of the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center. Organized in association with David Gryn, Director of London's Artprojx. In addition, Zurich film connoisseur This Brunner selects a feature length film for a special screening at the Colony Theatre.

Survey: Survey presents precise art historical projects that may include solo presentations by an individual artist, or juxtapositions and thematic exhibits from artists representing a range of cultures, generations, and artistic approaches. For 2014, you'll find displays on: Ralston Crawford, Henry Darger, Poul Gernes, Tetsuya Ishida, Lydia Okumura, Lotty Rosenfeld, Michelle Stuart, Taller Torres-García and Alfredo Volpi, plus others.

Miami Art Week - December 1 - 7, 2014

Let me start off by saying Miami Art Week is the best Contemporary Art Week in the United States, and most likely the best/largest in the world. If you love art this is your week, be in Miami.

More than 1100 galleries from around the world are bring art to Miami and Miami Beach. Plus all of the art museums and non-profit art organizations are planning special exhibitions and events. Did I mention galleries and artist studios, Miami has a bunch of good ones that should be visited, and much more. Finally, the weather should be in the 70-80 degree range, making for a great week.

If possible, plan on spending at least four days at Miami Art Week, as the week is flush with opportunities to mix, mingle; and, of course, feast one’s eyes on an incredible array of great art! Not only are the art fairs vibrant and engaging in of themselves, but related events and parties occur at local art museums, private collections, non-profit art organizations, galleries and artist studios.

Record Attendance at
Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong

The Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong second edition (21 – 23 March 2014) was bigger, brighter and more fun. The Fair welcomed over 29,000 visitors, becoming the best-attended Affordable Art Fair globally in the company’s 15 year history. Thousands of artworks on display from over 120 local and international galleries coupled with exciting new features and the fun, welcoming atmosphere, it translated to nearly HKD $39 million in art sales.

Armed with its promise to demystify the world of art, the three-day Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong 2014 featured thousands of paintings, prints, sculpture and photography all under one roof, all between a price point of HK$1,000 and HK$100,000. With something for every taste, budget and collection big or small, the Fair attracted both seasoned collectors looking to test their eye as well as many new and aspiring collectors. The Fair once again found a vibrant developing art market in Hong Kong, bringing artworks from all over the world, with 60% of the participating galleries from Asia including 35 from Hong Kong.

The second edition of the Young Talent Hong Kong exhibited over 30 pieces and provided young and emerging local artists a platform in which to show their creative artworks and was hugely successful with half of the artworks sold. A specially curated exhibition of artworks on the Under HK$10,000 Wall showcasing a diverse range of accessible artworks from around 40 art galleries was also very well received.

The Fair featured an exciting array of arty activities, such as artist special projects, Sol Passion’s Dare to DJ Workshop, Children’s Art Studio supported by Sunkids and Faber Castell, the Creative Workshop by Starlit Art Space and Gallery Speed Dating. Visitors also enjoyed dynamic panel discussions with leading young artists, collectors and experts from the local Hong Kong art scene, gaining insight on how to navigate their way through the burgeoning art market.

“The Second Fair in Hong Kong saw unprecedented success in the company’s history, it was a great success both for galleries and their artists, and our local Hong Kong visitors - in fact, this has been our best attended Fair ever, over-taking the record of 25,000 visitors set by our flagship fair in Battersea London! This is the best gift for us as we celebrate our 15th anniversary and 100th Fair this year! We would like to thank DBS Bank (Hong Kong) our lead sponsor for helping us continue to grow in Asia.” commented Will Ramsay, founder of Affordable Art Fair.

If the Affordable Art is in your neighborhood you should plan on visiting.
